BATES FALLS TO #2 AMHERST, 19-9

AMHERST, Mass. — The Bates College women's lacrosse team missed a chance to clinch a berth in the inaugural New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) tournament today as the visiting Bobcats dropped a 19-9 decision to host Amherst College, ranked #2 in the nation.

Amherst (11-1, 7-1 NESCAC) jumped out to an early 5-1 lead 12 minutes into the lead before sophomore Liz Lawler (Dublin, N.H.) notched the second of her team-high three first-half goals, cutting the lead to 5-3. The Lord Jeffs closed out the first half on a 5-1 run to take a 10-5 lead into the break. Amherst scored the first two goals of the second half before Bates senior Erin Flynn (Newton, N.J.) scored back-to-back goals around the five minute mark to cut the lead back to five at 12-7, but Amherst senior Krisin Osborne (Morristown, N.J.) notched the fifth of her game-high seven goals moments later to return momentum to the hosts, who went on to the victory. Bates sophomore Liz Coulson (Devon, Pa.) made 17 saves in the losing effort, while the Amherst duo of Jess Thaxton and Brooke Diamond combined for five saves.

Bates can still clinch a berth in the NESCAC tournament with a win over Middlebury on Saturday or a Tufts victory over Connecticut College. Amherst will face Williams with the tournament's second seed on the line and possibly the No. 1 seed if Bates knocks off Middlebury.
