SECOND HALF SURGE LIFTS COLBY PAST BATES, 17-10, IN NESCAC PLAY

LEWISTON, Maine -- Colby College first-year attack Ally King (W. Hartford, Conn.) scored five goals in the second half to break open a 7-7 tie as the White Mules defeated the host Bates College Bobcats, 17-10, on Lafayette Street Field today.

Bates (2-5) started the game strongly, taking a 5-3 lead just under 12 minutes into the contest on a goal by first-year attack Liz Lawler (Dublin, N.H.). Colby regained the lead by scoring the next three goals, but the Bobcats answered, regaining a 7-6 lead with 7:14 remaining in the first on a tally by rookie midfielder Kathrene Tiffany (Boston, Mass.). That looked to stand headed into the break before Colby's Angela Pappas (Gwynedd Valley, Pa.) scored with 1:16 on the clock, evening the score. Colby (7-4), ranked 20th in the most recent USWILA Division III poll, rattled off the first seven goals of the second half, not allowing Bates back in the game.

Bates was led by Lawler's career-high four goals. Junior Erin Flynn (Newton, N.J.) and sophomore Liz Coulson (Devon, Pa.) each contributed two goals and an assist. Colby's Pappas led all scorers with five goals and two assists for seven points, while King also had five goals. Sophomore Marcia Ingraham (Georgetown, Mass.) had four goals for the White Mules, while senior Nicki Furek (W. Hartford, Conn.) contributed three assists. Bates goalkeeper Jen Strahle (Ridgewood, N.J.) made 17 saves in the losing effort, while Colby's Mary Zito (Manhasset, N.Y.) had eight.

Bates faces another NESCAC rival, Connecticut College, on Saturday at 10 a.m. at Wellesley College in Wellesley, Mass. Colby travels to Middlebury, Vt., to take on the No 3 Panthers of Middlebury College the same day.
