BATES WOMEN TOP RPI TO START SEASON

NORTON, Mass. - The Bates College women's basketball team (1-0) dispatched 21-game winners RPI (0-1) in the first round of the Wheaton Tip-Off Classic, 81-58.

The Bobcats led 34-30 at halftime, but opened the second half on a 20-4 run , extending the lead to 54-34. The Engineers cut the lead back to seven after a timeout, but Bates bounced back with another 7-0 run.

Junior Emily King (Lebanon, N.H.) led the way for the Bobcats with 18 points, while senior A.T. Taylor (Orono, Maine) had 13 in her first game back from knee surgery. Junior Jolene Thurston (Post Mills, Vt.)had 12 points and a team-high eight rebounds, while senior co-captain Colleen McCrave (Walpole, Mass.) had 12 steals and eight assists. The Bobcats face the winners of Wheaton and Framingham State tomorrow at 3 p.m.
