Bates 79, MIT 66
BATES DOWNS MIT IN FIRST ROUND OF WPI PROVIDENT INVITATIONAL The Bates College women's basketball team, ranked No. 1 in the most recent New England Women's Basketball Association poll, picked up right where they left off at the end of the first semester with a 79-66 victory over MIT. The Bobcats (7-0) led by 11 at the half, 36-25. A late Engineer (5-2) run brought MIT to within seven with 1:45 left in the game, but Bates scored the final eight points to close things out. Junior forward Emily King (Lebanon, N.H.) led all scorers with 20 points on eight-of-15 shooting from the floor. Senior co-captain Colleen McCrave (Walpole, Mass.) had a terrific defensive night, grabbing a game-high 12 rebounds and swiping six steals to go along with seven assists on the offensive end. McCrave now needs nine steals to tie and 10 to surpass Jenn Denby of Rowan University to become the all-time steal leader among NCAA Division III women. Also scoring in double figures for the Bobcats were senior guard Amy Taylor (Orono, Maine) and sophomore center Katy Dutille (Lebanon, N.H.), who each had 14 points. The Bobcats forced 31 turnovers, and have surpassed the 30 mark in every game this season. Bates will face the hosts from WPI in the championship game tomorrow at 4 p.m.
