BATES WOMEN DOWN UNIVERSITY OF NEW ENGLAND, 84-63

LEWISTON, Maine -- The Bates College women's basketball team sank 20 of its first 25 shots en route to an 84-63 win over the University of New England Nor'easters at Alumni Gymnasium on Monday.

Six Bobcats scored in double figures. Rookies Olivia Zurek (Arlington, Mass.) and Katie King (Turner, Maine) sparked the Bobcat offense in the early going and each finished the night six-of-seven from the field with 13 points. Zurek also had three rebounds and three steals, while King led the Bobcats with five rebounds.

Junior Lisa Golobski (Methuen, Mass.) scored 12, while senior point guard Kate Dockery (New York, N.Y.) chimed in with 11 to complement her four assists and two blocked shots. The Bobcats finished the night an impressive .657 from the field, and dominated the transition game throughout the contest. Carla Flaherty (Gorham, Maine) and Laura Nafe (Roland, Ark.) were the other two Bobcats to score at least 10.

Senior Amanda Rodgerson (Hampden, Maine) led the Nor'easter offense with a game-high 20 points, and sophomore Missy Stults (Goshen, Ind.) pitched in with 17. The Nor'easters struggled in the first stanza, but bounced back in the second half to finish with a .393 field goal percentage. UNE (2-2) outrebounded Bates 39-31, but turned the ball over 25 times.

Bates (1-1) took a commanding 49-24 lead at the half and widened the gap in the second thanks to the hot hand of Nafe. She played only 14 minutes for the Bobcats, but finished the night with 4 assists and 11 points, nine of which came from beyond the arc.
