NESCAC WOMEN'S BASKETBALL TOURNAMENT SEMIFINALS
Quick start leads Middlebury past Bates, 61-56

BRUNSWICK, Maine — The Middlebury College women's basketball team used a strong first half showing and held off a late charge by Bates to take a 61-56 victory in the NESCAC Semifinals on Saturday. Middlebury (22-5) will take on defending NESCAC Champion Bowdoin in the NESCAC Championship Game tomorrow at noon. Bates (18-7) likely ends their season with the loss.

The Panthers hit on 43% of their shots (15-35) in the first half and held Bates to only 30% (9-30) from the field as they took a 36-21 lead into halftime. The Bobcats would cut into the lead in the second half, closing to two points with seven minutes remaining on a hoops by sophomore Lauren Dubois (Beverly, Mass.) on an assist from senior Kate Dockery (New York, N.Y.) . But a key three-pointer by Kristin Hanley increased the lead back to five points and keyed an 11-2 run for the Panthers as they held onto the win. Alexis Batten was unstoppable on the inside for Middlebury, scoring 18 points for the Panthers. Wesley Hyatt (11) and Alexis Hollinger (10) also reached double digits for Middlebury.

Dockery and junior Carla Flaherty (Gorham, Maine) tied for team-high scoring honors for the Bobcats with 13 points. Junior Lisa Golobski (Methuen, Mass.) recorded a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds, while rookie Olivia Zurek (Arlington, Mass.) also had 12 points.
