BATES WOMEN FALL TO NO. 4 BOWDOIN, 65-51

BRUNSWICK, Maine — The Bates College women's basketball team saw its second five-game winning streak of the season snapped tonight as the Bobcats suffered their first CBB loss, 65-51, at the hands of the Bowdoin College Polar Bears. The Bobcats fall to 10-3, 1-1 CBB with the loss, while Bowdoin, ranked fourth in the nation in the most recent D3hoops.com poll, improves to 13-0, 2-0 CBB.

A closely-fought first half saw the Bobcats jump out to an early advantage, taking a 12-5 lead on a Carla Flaherty (Gorham, Maine) 3-pointer just over five minutes into the contest. Bates would stretch the lead to as many as nine as rookie Olivia Zurek (Arlington, Mass.) hit on 4-of-5 shots from the field in the first frame. The Polar Bears clawed back into the game with a 7-0 run, and eventually took a 30-27 lead into halftime on consecutive layups by Lindsay Bramwell and Lora Trenkle.

Bowdoin opened the second half on another 7-0 run to lead 37-27 with just over 18 minutes remaining, but Bates refused to die,. The Bobcats went on a 14-5 run to close the lead to 42-41 when Katie King (Turner, Maine) hit a jumper with 10:21 left. Bowdoin answered with three three-pointers just minutes later by Jessie Mayol, Lindsay Bramwell and Kristi Royer to take a 53-43 lead with 5:21 to go, sealing the victory.

Bates was led by Flaherty's 12 points and five boards, along with Lauren Dubois' (Beverly, Mass.) 10 points. Royer had an outstanding night for the Polar Bears, finishing with 21 points on 8-for-14 shooting from the field and seven boards. Jessie Mayol (15 points), Lora Trenkle (11) and Lindsay Bramwell (10) also reached double figures for Bowdoin. Bowdoin held a 43-26 advantage on the boards, including a 15-7 edge in offensive rebounds. The Polar Bears hit on five of seven efforts from behind the three-point arc in the second half (71.4%).

Bowdoin returns to action on Friday night when they travel to Middlebury, while the Bobcats will host Amherst on Friday.
