SECOND HALF SURGE LEADS BOBCATS PAST WESLEYAN, 62-49

LEWISTON, Maine — The Bates College women's basketball team held visiting Wesleyan University without a field goal over an 11-minute stretch in the second half as the Bobcats defeated the Cardinals, 62-49, in New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) hoops action today.

Bates (17-7, 7-2 NESCAC) locked up a home contest in the inaugural NESCAC tournament with the win. The Bobcats led by three, 40-37, with just under 13 minutes left in the contest when they went on the decisive run, outscoring the Cardinals 22-4 to take a 21-point lead. Wesleyan hit just three-of-24 shots in the second half before making the last four buckets of the game.

The first half of the contest was much closer, featuring seven lead changes. Wesleyan (13-9, 2-7) took a two-point advantage into the locker room after a traditional three-point play by senior Ellen Tuzzolo (Harvard, Mass.) with 13 seconds on the clock. The Cardinals were eliminated from the NESCAC tournament with the loss.

Bates was led by senior forward Kate McLaughlin (Laconia, N.H.), who recorded her seventh double-double of the season with 18 points and 11 rebounds, both game-highs in her final regular season contest. Junior Kate Dockery (New York, N.Y.) added 17 points and five assists, while sophomore Carla Flaherty (Gorham, Maine) had 11.

Sophomore guard Shaleen Bowman (Guilford, Conn.) was the only Wesleyan player to score in double figures with 12 points, 10 coming in the first half. Classmate Kamica Lewis (Jamaica Hills, N.Y.) had a team-high nine rebounds, while rookie Amy Posocco (Willington, Conn.) took game-high honors with six assists.
