SOUTHERN MAINE WINS EARLY SEASON CLASH

LEWISTON, Maine -- In a battle of the two top-ranked women's basketball teams in the state, the University of Southern Maine downed the host Bates College Bobcats, 77-69, in Alumni Gymnasium.

After a close first half that saw the Huskies (2-1) take a 47-44 lead into the locker room, USM went on an 11-2 run to start the second half, giving them a 58-45 lead they would never relinquish. The Bobcats (1-2) rallied behind hot 3-point shooting, but could not overcome the deficit.

Southern Maine was led by junior forward Jaime Zahm (Montpelier, Vt.), who scored a career-high 25 points on 12-of-13 shooting from the floor. Bates was paced for the third game in a row by senior Kate McLaughlin (Laconia, N.H.), with 18 points and eight rebounds. The Bobcats also set a new school record with nine 3-pointers in a game: four from rookie guard Lynne Antinarelli (Bedford, Mass.), three by sophomore Marcy Grossman (Eastsound, Wash.) and two by sophomore center Lisa Golobski (Methuen, Mass.). In addition to her 10 points, Golobski grabbed five rebounds, matching rookie Justine Ferland (Old Town, Maine) for second most on the team.
