BATES WOMEN'S HOOPS DOWNS UMF, 69-53

LEWISTON, Maine — The Bates College women's basketball team used an 11-2 run midway through the second half tonight to run away from the visiting University of Maine-Farmington Beavers and take a 69-53 non-conference victory.

With Bates (13-7) leading, 42-40, just over five minutes into the second stanza, head coach Jim Murphy inserted his reserves. The Bobcats promptly went on the decisive run over the next 2:47, taking a 53-42 lead with 12:11 on the clock. UMF (9-9) scored the next bucket to cut the lead to nine, but the Beavers never got any closer after Bates scored the next two hoops.

The Bobcats won for the sixth time in the last seven meetings against UMF with superior bench play, as the Bates reserves outscored Farmington's, 32-7. The Bates bench was led by Maine Co-Rookie of the Week Lauren Dubois (Beverly, Mass.), whose 12 points matched team-high honors with starting forward Kate McLaughlin (Laconia, N.H.). Bates held UMF to just 21.2 percent shooting (7-33) in the second half, while shooting 38.9 percent themselves (14-36).

UMF led by as many as nine in the first half at 23-14 with 12:31 remaining, thanks to 11 points from senior guard Jen Robertson (Biddeford, Maine), who hit four-of-five shots from the floor, including three 3-pointers. Bates then closed the first half on a 19-7 run, at one point hitting eight straight free throws, to take a 33-30 lead into the locker room.

Maine-Farmington was led by senior forward Rebecca Roak (Portland, Maine), who had game-highs with 17 points and nine rebounds. Robertson, who was kept off the board in the second half, finished with 11 points and junior Rachel Bard (Winslow, Maine) had 10.
