WOMEN'S HOOPS SPLITS AT MIT TIP-OFF TOURNEY

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. -- The Bates College women's basketball team opened the 2000-01 season at the MIT Tip-Off tournament, finishing in third place. The Bobcats (1-1) dropped the season opener to Trinity (Texas) University, 67-49, before blasting Curry College in the consolation game, 91-46.

In the opener, the Bobcats could not get on track from the floor, hitting 35.6 percent (21-59). Ten different Bobcats scored points, but only senior co-captain Kate McLaughlin (Laconia, N.H.) reached double figures, hitting six-of-nine shots for 12 points. She also grabbed a team-high six rebounds. Sophomore center Lisa Golobski (Methuen, Mass.) added eight points and a career-high five assists. Trinity, who went 21-6 in 1999-2000, was led by center Megan Selmon's 13 points and 10 rebounds.

In the consolation game, the Bates defense shined, holding the Colonels to seven percent shooting in the first half (2-26) and just over 20 percent for the game (11-54) en route to a 53-14 advantage at the break. All 15 Bobcats on the roster got into the contest, with 12 breaking into the scoring column. McLaughlin, who earned All-Tournament honors, led the way again with 19 points on 8-of-20 shooting, while rookie Justine Ferland's (Old Town, Maine) led the Bobcats with nine rebounds, including eight on the offensive glass. Junior guard Kate Dockery (New York, N.Y.) had 11 points and a game- and career-high four steals. Curry was led by center Megan Varricchio's double-double of 13 points and 10 rebounds.
