Bowdoin 78, Bates 67 BOWDOIN DOWNS BATES, 78-67, IN WOMEN'S HOOPS (Taken from a Bowdoin College press release) BRUNSWICK, Maine Bowdoin College sophomore Kristi Royer scored 16 points and hauled in 10 rebounds to lead the Polar Bear women's basketball team to a 78-67 victory over Bates on Friday evening. Royer was one of four players to hit double digits on the evening for Bowdoin (13-4, 5-0 NESCAC) and her work assured the Polar Bears at least a piece of the 2001 CBB title with a season sweep of Bates (11-7, 2-2). Bowdoin put its mark on the game early on as the Polar Bears broke open an 8-8 tie with a 16-2 run midway through the half. First-year Courtney Trotta started the run with back-to-back three-pointers before Royer gave Bowdoin a 24-10 lead with a three-ball of her own. The Polar Bears shot 58 percent from the floor in the first frame while Bates converted just 27 percent of its tries. Bates made a run in the first five minutes of the second half to trim the lead to 13 points (52-39) with 14:39 left in the game on a Kate McLaughlin (Laconia, N.H.) free throw. Bowdoin responded over the next five minutes with a run of its own and Lauren Myers increased the lead back to 20 points (61-41) on a pair of free throws. The Polar Bears still had a comfortable, 76-55, lead with 2:37 left in the game before the Bobcats made a late-game push. With the reserves for both teams on the floor, Bates ended the contest on a 12-2 run to put the final margin at 78-67. Mayol (14) joined Bennett and Royer in double-figures for Bowdoin while Lora Trenkle chipped in with 10 more. McLaughlin was the top gun for the Bobcats with 17 points and 10 boards.
