BATES WOMEN CRUISE IN WPI TOURNEY OPENER WORCESTER, Mass. -- The Bates College women's basketball team (6-1) had little problem with MIT (2-5) in the first round of the Unum/Provident Tournament hosted by WPI, as the Bobcats defeated the Engineers, 83-36. The Bobcats wer eled by senior forward Emily King (Lebanon, N.H.), who had a game-high 18 points in just 20 minutes of play, while pulling down six rebounds and making five steals. First-year guard Marcy Grossman (Eastsound, Wash.), making her first career start, scored 15 points on six-of-11 shooting, while classmate Carla Flaherty (Gorham, Maine) had 12 points, including two 3-pointers. The Bates defense was stifling in the first half, allowing MIT just 20 percent shooting from the floor (six of 30). The Engineers were also hurt by poor free-throw shooting, missing all 10 of their foul shots in the first half. The Bobcats led, 40-12, at the break, and played even better i the second half, when they shot 64 percent from the field, finishing the game at 50 percent (35-70) from the floor. The Bobcats will take on Clarkson University in the finals tomorrow at 3 p.m. The Golden Knights defeated the host WPI Engineers, 78-74, in overtime in the first game.
