BATES WOMEN THROTTLE BABSON, 71-40 LEWISTON, Maine -- The Bates College women's basketball team opened the second half on a 21-1 run to secure their sixth win in a row with a 71-40 victory over the visiting Babson College Beavers in Alumni Gym today. Neither team was able to establish a rhythm in the first half, with both squads shooting about 30 percent from the field as Bates (10-1) opened up a 30-18 lead at the intermission by forcing 18 first-half turnovers. Bates' Emily King (Lebanon, N.H.) and Babson's Kaitlin Conroy (Old Greenwich, Conn.) each had a game-high seven points in the first half. Babson (7-5) was unable to find an answer to the Bates defensive pressure in the second half. The Beavers missed their first seven field goal attempts and committed seven turnovers in the first seven and a half minutes of the second stanza as Bates took a 51-19 lead with 12:30 on the clock. Bates held the Beavers to just 23.4 percent shooting from the floor in the game (11-47), well below their normal 42.1 percent. The Bobcats also forced 33 Babson turnovers. First-year forward Marcy Grossman (Eastsound, Wash.) led the Bobcats in scoring for the first time this season with 13 points, while King record her third double-double of the season with 11 points and a team-high 12 rebounds. Babson's Conroy led all players with 14 boards, while she first-year center Pia Bertone-Gross (Agawam, Mass.) each had nine points to lead the Beavers.
