BATES WOMEN SWEEP BOWDOIN BEHIND KING DOUBLE-DOUBLE (Taken from a Bowdoin College press release) BRUNSWICK, Maine - Bates College senior Emily King (Lebanon, N.H.) scored 13 points, grabbed 10 rebounds and dished out five assist while the Bobcats made 9-of-12 free throws in the final minute of play on their way to a 75-65 victory over Bowdoin in NESCAC women's basketball action on Tuesday evening. Bates improves to 11-1 on the season (1-0 in the conference) while Bowdoin drops to 3-7 (0-1). Bates jumped out to a 25-18 lead with five minutes remaining the first half paced by eight points from Katy Dutille (Lebanon, N.H.). Sparked by the play of first-year Kristi Royer, the Polar Bears rattled off a 10-0 run for a 28-25 lead with 28 ticks left in the half. Royer scored six of her 11 points in the run for Bowdoin. A layup by Dutille and a free throw by Marcy Grossman (Eastsound, Wash.) brought the Bobcats back to 28-28 heading into the break. The two teams stayed close for the first 11 minutes of the second half, but Bowdoin put on a spurt and claimed a 48-45 edge on a Jessica Farmer lay-in. The Polar Bears looked to take control of the game, but Grossman canned a big three-pointer to tie the game and spark the Bobcats to a 16-8 run that provided a 61-56 lead with 2:42 left in the game. Bowdoin would get no closer than four the rest of the way. Dutille and Grossman paced Bates with 15 points each while King added her 13 points. The Bobcats were aided by 26 more trips to the free throw line than Bowdoin. Lauren Myers had 18 points to lead the Polar Bears while Royer grabbed a team-high eight rebounds.
