CAMBRIDGE, Mass. -- The Bates College volleyball team had an outstanding performance at the MIT Invitational, winning four matches before falling in the finals.

The third-ranked Bobcats opened against No. 8 Tufts on the Jumbos' home court, which was being used as an alternate site for the Friday evening matches. Bates fell behind 8-1 in the first game of the match, but rallied to win it 15-13. They won game two even later, 17-15, before pulling away in the third game, 15-5. Senior Amanda Colby (Williamantic, Conn.) had 13 kills, 12 digs and 5 blocks in the contest, while sophomore Lauren Fennessey (Joplin, Mo.) had 12 kills and 11 digs. The Bobcats had an easier time in the nightcap, defeating unranked Western Connecticut in three straight, as Colby had 11 kills and junior setter Kate Hagstrom (Portola, Calif.) had 26 assists and three aces.

On the second day of action, the Bobcats defeated Eastern Connecticut in the quarterfinals of the tournament, 15-7, 15-11, 15-4. In the semifinals, Bates took care of another ranked opponent, downing No. 2 Springfield, 15-5, 15-10, 15-7. The win marked just the Bobcats second-ever over the Pride. The Bobcats finally met their match in top-ranked Wellesley, a squad that finished the 1998 season undefeated. Bates lost in three straight, but they took the Blue to 16-14 in the final game of the match.

For the second straight tournament, Hagstrom and Colby each earned All-Tournament honors.
