BRUNSWICK, Maine - The Bates College volleyball team, ranked No. 2 in the region, used strong play at the net to take a 15-7, 15-5, 15-13, victory over Bowdoin College on Wednesday night. With the victory, Bates (11-3) captures the CBB Championship as they defeated Colby earlier in the season. Bowdoin falls to 8-4 on the year.

Bowdoin used the outstanding play of Samantha Good (Haverhill, Mass.) to take a 4-3 lead early in the first game, however the Bobcats would respond by outscoring the Polar Bears, 12-3, the rest of the first frame for the 15-7 victory. Senior Amanda Colby (Willimantic, Conn.) was superb at the net, leading the Bates comeback.

Colby and junior Amanda Webb (E. Greenbush, N.Y.) sparked Bates in the second game as the Bobcats jumped out to a 9-0 lead. Bowdoin managed to cut the deficit to 11-5 as senior Stacey Jones (Kansas City, Kan.) and junior co-caption Jamie Bennett (Marlborough, Mass.) played inspired volleyball in the middle. Bates eventually served out the game, winning 15-5.

In the third game, the Polar Bears came out strong, jumping to a quick, 4-0 lead. Again paced by Colby and sophomore Lauren Fennessey (Joplin, Mo.), Bates rallied to take a 7-4 lead. A never-say-die Bowdoin squad responded with four-straight points and an 8-7 lead. That lead ballooned to 13-10 before a jittery Tim Byram, the Bates coach, called a timeout to settle the Bobcats. His team responded by rattling-off three straight to tie the affair. After a Bowdoin timeout, Bates put the finishing touches on the game for the 15-13 victory.
