BOBCATS TAKE FOURTH AT HALL OF FAME TOURNAMENT

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. -- After winning their bracket on the first day of competition, the Bates College volleyball team (24-7) dropped a pair of matches to finish in fourth place at the annual Hall of Fame Tournament in Springfield.

The Bobcats rallied from 2-1 down in their first match to defeat Wheaton College, winning the final two games, 15-8, 15-12. They then went on to upset Springfield College on the Pride's home court in four games. All three of Bates' wins in that match came by a 15-9 score.

Stiffer competition faced the Bobcats on day two of the tournament. In the semifinals, Division II University of Puerto Rico handed Bates its first 3-0 loss of the season, 15-6, 15-6, 15-3. The third-place match pitted Bates against Amherst in a battle of NESCAC foes. The Lord Jeffs used the momentum of a 16-14 win in the first game to finish the sweep, 15-5, 15-11.

Junior outside hitter Lauren Fennessey (Joplin, Mo.) represented the Bobcats on the All-Tournament team. Bates' next action is Friday when the Bobcats host the State of Maine Volleyball Championships, looking for their third-straight title.
