BATES SWIMMING AND DIVING SWEEPS TRINITY AND CONN. COLLEGE

Hartford, Conn. - In a tri-meet with Trinity and Connecticut College in Hartford, the Bobcats came away with four wins, of which only one was by fewer than 30 points.

The men's meet with Trinity was the closest of the afternoon. Bates trailed by six points after six events, but a one-two finish in the 50-yard freestyle by junior tricaptain Paul Urbanczyk (Washington, D.C.) and sophomore Miles Cobb (Bethesda, Md.) gave the Bobcats a one-point lead they would not relinqush. First-year diver Andrew Hastings (Weston, Mass.) improved his school record in the 1-meter diving (six dives) with a score of 276.85, and senior Corey Smith (West Hartford, Conn.) took second in front of the home town crowd, helping extent the Bobcats' to eight points. Trinity would cut the lead to three points with three events remaining, but Hastings extended his school record in the 3-meter diving event (6 dives) with a 299.60, while first-year Steve Imig (Denver, Colo.) set a facility record in the 100-yard individual medley, with a time of 58.44, to help ice the win. The 200 free relay team of Urbanzcyk, Cobb, Mike Jensen (Bedford, N.H.) and David Roth (Sharon, Conn.) captured the final event, putting the final score at 86.5-70.5. The Bobcats placed two racers ahead of every Connecticut College swimmer in every event bu two to give the Bobcats a 129-31 decision over the Camels.

The women's team had a much earier time, never trailing either team. Against Trinity, the Bobcats won eight of 15 events, winning 95-65, while taking 12 of 15 from Conn. College for a 112-48 victory. Sophomores Kara McKeever (Westport, Conn.) and Pamela Murchie (Westbrook, Maine) were each multiple winners, with McKeever taking the 50- and 100-yard breaststroke and Muchie capturing the 50- and 100-yard butterfly. Bates also got wins from sophomores Nicola Meyer (Chicag, Ill.) in the 50 backstroke and Gudrun Mirick (Chaska, Minn.) in the 50 free, and first-year Megan Simmons (Buffalo, N.Y.) in the 100 backstroke.
