SWIMMING AND DIVING SWEEPS NORWICH
Hasting Qualifies for NCAA Championships

NORTHFIELD, Vt. -- The Bates College swimming and diving teams swept the Norwich University Cadets on the road today. The men took a 142-85 victory, while the women won 131-92, despite swimming the final two events as exhibitions. For the second time in three meets, first-year diver Andrew Hastings (Weston, Mass.) reached the qualifying mark in the one-meter diving event, earning him a berth at the NCAA championships.

Hastings established a Norwich pool record in the 1-meter event with a score of 270.55. He had previously scored a 270.1 against Clark University, exceeding the 265 standard. Hastings is just the second diver in Bates history to reach the NCAAs and is the first rookie dive to accomplish the feat. First-year freestyler Dan Heneghan (Windsor Locks, Conn.) earned wins for the Bobcats in the 200- and 500-yard events. A third first-year winner for Bates was Ken Catalano (Lynn, Mass.), who captured the 400-yard individual medley in the Bobcats' sweep of the event. Senior captain Damon Bowe (Houma, La.) and sophomore Mike McCarthy (Highland Park, N.J.) took second and third.

Five different Bates women produced victories against the short-handed Cadets. Sophomore Gudrun Mirick (Chaska, Minn.) took the 1000-yard freestyle by more than 30 seconds in her first win at that distance this season. Sophomore Laura Hardester (Sparks, Nev.) led a sweep in the 400-yard I.M., while senior diver Joanne Murphy (West Hartford, Conn.) won both diving events. First-year swimmer Megan Simmons (Buffalo, N.Y.) led a sweep of the 200-yard backstroke, while classmate Laura Allen captured the 500 free.

With the two wins, the women remain perfect this season at 3-0, while the men improve to 2-1. Both teams take on Middlebury College tomorrow at noon.
