BATES SWIMMING AND DIVING SPLITS WITH COLBY

LEWISTON, Maine -- In the CBB opener for both teams, the Bates College men's swimming and diving team defeated Colby, 180-116, while the women dropped a 163-136 decision.

The men were paced by first-year backstroker Andrew O'Donnell (Leonia, N.J.), who established a school record in the 200 back with a time of 2:04.42. Sophomore Mike Jensen (Bedford, N.H.), who captured the 100 and 200 freestyle, was one of two Bobcats to win multiple individual events. First-year diver Andrew Hastings (Weston, Mass.) swept the diving events. Senior captains Damon Bowe (Houma, La.) and Chris Orpilla (Seaside, Calif.) captured the 200 fly and the 200 breast, respectively. In the final event of the day, the 200-free relay of Jensen, Dave Blaney (Bar Harbor, Maine), Paul Urbanczyk (Washington, D.C) and Miles Cobb (Bethesda, Md.) established a Colby pool record with a time of 1.39.90.

The women jumped out to a quick 49-25 lead behind a win from the 200 medley relay of Megan Simmons (Buffalo, N.Y.), Kara McKeever (Westport, Conn.), Pamela Murchie (Westbrook, Maine) and Gudrun Mirick (Chaska, Minn.). Mirick, swimming in her thrid straight event, won the 200 free and Simmons captured the 100 back, but the Bobcats would only get one more win on the day, by Simmons again, in the 200 back.

After the split with the White Mules, both Bates teams are 4-2.
