LEWISTON, Maine -- The Bates College swimming and diving teams opened the 2001-02 season with a pair of easy wins, defeating NESCAC foe Trinity College. The men took a 206-58 decision, while the women enjoyed a 160.5-94.5 victory. The meet was highlighted by two fine performances by Bobcat divers.

Rookie diver Kara Seaton (Wayne, Pa.) made a quite an impression in her first collegiate meet by breaking Bates College records in both the one- and three-meter events. She scored 241.60 in the one-meter event and 244.75 at three meters. Seaton broke both marks by more than 15 points. The previous one-meter record was held by Kristen Souwein '95 since 1992, while Kerry Rice '93 had held the three-meter mark since 1991. Both of Seaton's performance were just shy of NCAA championship qualifying marks. The Bobcats had three other multiple winners, including a pair of first-year swimmers. Nicole Sparks (New Canaan, Conn.) won the 50 and 100 freestyle events (25.88 and 56.02), while local product Vanessa Williamson (Auburn, Maine) captured the 100 butterfly and the 200 IM (1:01.03 and 2:16.24). Junior tri-captain Megan Ferrari (Doylestown, Pa.) won both the 50 and 100 breaststroke (32.70 and 1:10.87). Ferrari, Sparks, Williamson and senior Megan Simmons (Buffalo, N.Y.) also helped win the opening event, the 200 medley relay.

Men: Bates 206, Trinity 58

Senior diver Andrew Hastings (Weston, Mass.) led a sweep of all the men's events by Bates by qualifying for his fourth consecutive NCAA championships berth with a 271.60 in one-meter diving. He also won the three-meter event with a score of 268.05. Hastings is trying to become the first Bates athlete to win All-America honors in all four years at Bates. Junior David Bear (Winter Park, Fla.) was the day's was one of two three-event winners, taking the 500- and 1000-yard freestyle races (5:04.73 and 10:32) and the 200-yard individual medley 2:07.52). Junior Adam Bowden (Cumberland, Maine) won the shorter freestyle events, the 100 and 200 (50.57 and 1:52.95), as well as the 50 fly (25.07). Rookie Sao Ohn Hseng (Rangoon, Burma) won the 50 and 100 breaststroke.
