BATES OUTMANS NORWICH

LEWISTON, Maine — The Bates College swimming and diving teams cruised to victory over a pair of outmatched Norwich University squads. The men took a 209-37 decision, while the women earned a 224-46 nod. The Bobcats were able to rest some of their top performers for tomorrow's meet against Middlebury.

Men: Bates 209, Norwich 37

Senior diver Andrew Hastings (Weston, Mass.) was the performer of the meet once again, earning a score of 302.40 on the one-meter board, missing by nine points the school and facility records he set last year against Babson. He also narrowly missed qualifying for the NCAA championships in the 3-meter event with 270.35, less than five points away. Rookie Adam Eggert (Portland, Maine) won the 100 butterfly in 57.41 and the 100 breaststroke in 1:09.92, while classmates Nathan Curll (Hope, Maine) and John Getchell (Cumberland, Maine) also captured their first collegiate wins in the 200-yard freestyle(1:56.64) and 100 backstroke (59.56) respectively. Sophomore Todd Bretl (Barrington, R.I.) won the 50- and 100-yard free events.

Women: Bates 224, Norwich 46

Rookie diver Kara Seaton (Wayne, Pa.) was the only multiple winner for the women, taking both the 1- and 3-meter events with scores of 235.25 and 233.75, respectively. Among the rookies claiming their first collegiate wins for the women were Fiona Clifford (Westbrook, Maine) in the 50-yard breaststroke (35.44), Jackie Donnelly (Haverhill, Mass.) in the 100 free (59.47) and Jen Gerson (Boulder, Colo.) in the 500 free (6:21.17)
