WELLESLEY, Mass. The Bates College swimming and diving teams competed in just their second road event of the season, heading to Babson. The Bobcats did not enter any swimmers in more than two events and came away with a split. The women were victorious, 142-100, while the men dropped a 139-104 decision.
Women: Bates 142, Babson 100
The Bates women won eight of 13 events, producing just one multiple winner, diver Kara Seaton (Wayne, Pa.), who scored 229.75 on the one-meter board and 249.30 on three-meters, coming within six points of qualifying for the NCAA championships. The first-year class produced four other winners for the Bobcats: Nicole Sparks (New Canaan, Conn.) in the 1,000-yard freestyle; Alison Wensley (Rochester, N.H.) in the 200 free; Vanessa Williamson (Auburn, Maine) in the 100 backstroke; and Jackie Donnelly (Haverhill, Mass.) in the 500 free. Sophomore Catie Hinckley (Salt Lake City, Utah) won the 200 individual medley, while junior captain Megan Ferrari (Doylestown, Pa.) took the 100 butterfly.
Men: Babson 139, Bates104
The Bates men won just four events, divided between two athletes. Senior diver Andrew Hastings (Weston, Mass.) once again rewrote the record books with a 320.86 performance on the 3-meter board. He also won the one-meter with a score of 294.90. Both performances were NCAA qualifying marks, Hastings' first of the season on the three-meter board. Junior Dave Bear (Winter Park, Fla.) was the Bobcats' other winner, taking the distance free style events. Bear won the 1,000-yard free in 10:21.50 and the 500 in 5:01.34.
