Women hand Jumbos first NESCAC loss of season
MEDFORD, Mass.-- The Bates College swimming and diving teams were on opposite ends of the decisions for the first time this season, as the women improved to 6-2 with a narrow 156-144 win over Tufts, while the men lost to the Jumbos, 161-111, to fall to 5-3.
The women's meet came down to the Bobcats' better depth, as both teams won eight of the day's 16 events. Individually, sophomore Megan Ferrari (Doylestown, Pa.) was the Bobcats' top performer, taking the 50 and 200 breaststrokes and the 100 individual medley. Senior co-captains Gudrun Mirick (Chaska, Minn.) and Pamela Murchie (Westbrook, Maine) each won twice. Mirick captured the 50- and 100-yard freestyle, while Murchie won the 50- and 200-yard butterfly. Those events were the Bobcats' top team showings, as rookie Catie Hinkley (Salt Lake City, Utah) took third in both events, while junior Liz Horan (Manchester, N.H.) took second in the 200, giving Bates a 1-2-3 sweep with three events left. Ferrari and classmate Jill Kopicki (Cranford, N.J.), seperated by just .04 second, took the top two spots in the 200 IM, the next to last event, to clinch the win.
High points for the men in their loss were sophomore David Bear (Winter Park, Fla.), who won the 400 IM and the 500 freestyle. Junior Andrew Hastings (Weston, Mass.) was impressive,breaking his own school record for the secod time in three weeks in 1-meter diving with a performance of 297.55.
