LEWISTON, Maine -- The Bates College swimming and diving teams each improved to 5-1 on the season with victories in their final home meet today. The women breezed, 139-84, while the men captured a tight meet that was within one point with four events remaining, 129-114.

Women: Bates 139, Babson 84

The women won 12 of the 13 events, including 1-2-3 sweeps in the 100 butterfly, 100 backstroke and 500 freestyle. Nine different Bobcats won indiviual events, including sophomore Amanda Golden (Goldens Bridge, N.Y.) in 3-meter diving, her first win of the season, and seniors Gudrun Mirick (Chaska, Minn.) in the 50 free and Pamela Murchie (Westbrook, Maine) in the 500 free, both competing in the final home meet of their careers.

Men: Bates 129, Babson 114

The men's meet was dominated by the Bates divers. Junior Andrew Hastings (Weston, Mass.) and rookie Ben Takai (Montgomery Village, Md.) the top two spots in both one- and three-meter events by wide margins. Hastings established his second and third Tarbell Pool facility records of the season, scoring 292.75 in the one-meter event and 311.20 in the three-meters. Both were also school records and were Hastings' first official NCAA qualifying standards of the season. Takai took second in both events, scoring 216.50 and 250.35, respectively. The meet was extremely close, with Babson trailing by just one point with four events to go when sophomore David Bear (Winter Park, Fla.) won the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 4:56.68, while junior Nick Kuppens (Onset, Mass.) and sophomore Tim Kirkman (Nahant, Mass.) took third and fourth to give the Bobcats some breathing room heade into the three-meter diving.
