BATES SWIMMING AND DIVING SWEEPS WESLEYAN

MIDDLETOWN, Conn. -- In a pair of very competitive meets, the Bates College swimming and diving teams narrowly defeated the host Wesleyan University Cardinals, 129-114 on the men's side and 128-112 for the women.

The Bobcats trailed only once in the entire meet, as Wesleyan won the men's 400 medley relay. Bates tied the score in the next event, the 1000-yard freestyle, as first-year swimmer David Bear (Winter Park, Fla.) won the event by setting a school record with a time of 10:03.95, topping the mark set by teammate Dan Heneghan (Windsor Locks, Conn.) last Jan. 19 against Babson. Bear went on to win two more events, the 200 IM (2:05.53) and the 500 free (4:54.49), the latter helping to extend an 85-84 lead to 98-90. Sophomore All-American Andrew Hastongs (Weston, Mass.) was the Bobcats' only other multiple winner for the men, taking both the one- and three-meter events, giving Bates an 11-point edge with two events to go. Wesleyan narrowed the lead to 116-112 by taking the top two spots in the 200-yard breast, but a relay win in the 400 free by sophomore David Blaney (Bar Harbor, Maine), first-year Adam Bowden (Cumberland, Maine), seniors Paul Urbanczyk (Washington, D.C.) and junior Mike Jensen (Bedford, N.H.) cliched the meet victory.

The Bates women never trailed in the meet, and were tied only after two events. Junior tri-captain Gudrun Mirick (Chaska, Minn.) was Bates only multiple winner, taking the 50-yard freestyle (25.65) and the 100 (55.85). The Bobcats led by as much as 30 points with four events left, but a Wesleyan rally made the result in doubt until the final event. The Bobcats won the 400-yard free relay with a time of 3:55.59, behind the relay team of junior Pamela Murchie (Westbrook, Maine), first-year Cate Murray (Centreville, Mass.), senior tri-captain Megan Shelley (Potomac, Md.) and first-year Megan Ferrari (Doylestown, Pa.), swimming the anchor leg.
