BATES SWIMMING AND DIVING SWEEPS NORWICH AS RECORDS FALL

LEWISTON, Maine -- The Bates College men's and women's swimming and diving teams swept Norwich University in a pair of dual meets today. The Bobcat women (2-0) took a 166-95 decision from the Cadets (0-3), while the men (2-0) defeated Norwich (1-2) by a 160-98 score.

A pair records fell in the meet. For the women, first-year swimmer Megan Ferrari (Doylestown, Pa.) established a new Bates College record in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 32.46 seconds, topping teammate Liz Fey's (Westport, Conn.) mark set in 1998. In the final race of the day, the 800-yard freestyle relay team of first-year Adam Bowden (Cumberland, Maine), sophomore Dan Heneghan (Windsor Locks, Conn.), senior captain Mike Jensen (Bedford, N.H.) and first-year David Bear (Winter Park, Fla.) erased a seven-year-old Tarbell Pool record with their winning time of 7:37.65.

In all, the Bates men won all but two races, while the women took 11 of 14 events. Multiple winners for the Bates women included Ferrari in the 50 breaststroke and 100 butterfly, first-year Jill Kopicki (Edison, N.J.) in the 50 butterfly and 100 breaststroke and junior tri-captain Gudrun Mirick (Chaska, Minn.) in the 200 and 500 freestyle. Norwich junior Rachel Gaidis (Barre, Vt.) was the Cadets' only multiple winner in the 50- and 100-yard freestyle. Jensen in the 100 and 200 freestyle, Bear in the 100 butterfly and 400 individual medley, sophomore Andrew O'Donnell (Leonia, N.J.) in the 50 and 100 backstroke and first-year diver David Bilodeau (Nashua, N.H.) in the diving events all won multiple events for the men. Don MacFarlane (Atlanta, Ga.) won the 50- and 100-breaststroke for the Norwich men.
