Men's Basketball Tops Suffolk,92-75, To End Semester; Several Players
Nationally
Ranked
The Bobcats braved the weather on Saturday to head down to Suffolk
University,
where they came away with a victory, 92-75, despite being without
three of their
starters for much of the game. With senior co-captain Jay Lowe not
even making the
trip in order to take his GREs, Bates was shorthanded to begin with.
Then juniors
Matt Garvey and Mike Marsh each received technical fouls in the first
half, earning
them the rest of the afternoon off. The rest of the Bobcats stepped it
up in absence,
with 12 players tallying points, eight scoring eight or more points.
Senior pointguard
Adam Piandes once again led the way with 21 points and nine assists.
First-year
center Andy Hall, out for the first two weeks of the season due to
injury, made a
solid collegiate debut, scoring 11 points and making four steals. The
Bobcats end the
semester at 5-1.
Bates basketball teams, both men and women are currently ranked
nationally in
several statistical categories. The men are tied for ninth in the
country with 9.0 3-
point baskets per game, while Piandes was fifth in the nation with 9.0
assists per
game and 12th with a 92.9 free throw percentage. The women are
ninth in the
country in scoring, averaging 81.2 points per game and 14th in field
goal percentage,
shooting 46.7 percent. Indiviually, first-year guard Colleen McCrave is
ranked
second nationally with 6.7 steals per game, while senior guard Dianna
Devlin is
fourth with 8.0 assists per game. Devlin's Bates record of 15 assists
against
Westbrook is also the high assist game of the season in the NCAA. .

Men's Indoor Track Takes UMass-Lowell Down to the Wire
Despite taking 41 of 54 possible points in the field events, the Bobcats
fell short
against Division II UMass-Lowell, 62-54. Top scorers for Bates were
sophomore
Enrico Hrring, who won the long jump (21' 5 1/2") and finished second
in the 55M
dash (6.79) and 200M dash (23.20), first-year jumper Dan Poteet, who
won the triple
jump (36' 0") and placed third in the long jump (17' 5 1/2") and
throwers
sophomore Walter Jackson, who was first in the shot put (44' 1") and
third in the
weight throw (44' 5") and junior Sam Martin, who placed second in
both shot put
(43' 4 1/2") and weight throw (45' 6"). The Bobcats had a chance to
win in the last
two events, the 3000M run and the 4x400 relay. Needing a 1-3
minimum finish in
the 3000 to have a chance at the relay, senior Sean Galipeau and
junior Steve
Beardsley ran excellent races, but were passed in the final lap by a
UMass-Lowell
runner to preserve the win for the River Hawks, who went on to take
the relay
anyway.

Swimming and Diving Falls at Bowdoin, Women Suffer First Loss
The Bobcat swim teams both lost to Bowdoin on Thursday evening. The
men lost
131-112, while the women fell 149-96. For the men, sophomore Steve
Simmons was
the team's only multiple winner, taking the 200M butterfly (2:06.61)
and the 500M
freestyle (5:19.20), while first-year student Dave Burke won the 1M diving
(2:01.9), senior co-
captain Chris Eastman took the 100M freestyle (51.00) and first-year
swimmer Chris
Orpilla won the 200M breaststroke (2:22.96). The women got the usual
outstanding
performance from senior Melissa Sander, who won the 200M freestyle
(2:02.90), the
200M butterfly (2:15.15) and the 500M freestyle (5:22.32). Senior co-
captain Beth
Sawyer was able to capture second in the 50M and 100M freestyle
(26.86 and 58.44),
while junior Allyson Boyle took second in the 1000M freestyle
(11:40.28). The men
fall to 1-2, while the women take their first loss, 2-1.

The men's squash team took on Dartmouth and Yale on Dec. 9th and lost a
pair, 9-0 to Dartmouth and 8-1 to Yale. Peter Linkroum provided the
Bobcats' only win of the day.
