Bates Football Downed By Hamilton, Capture Part
of CBB Title
The Bates College Football team fell to Hamilton College, 34-14, ending
their season. Despite their losing effort, the Bobcats gained a share of
the CBB title, as Bowdoin defeated Colby, 24-3.
In the first quarter, the Bobcats had an early turnover which led to a Hamilton
touchdown to start the game. But they recovered on an 80-yard drive with
first-year fullback Jon Schlafman scoring on a one-yard plunge into the
endzone. The Bobcats tied it up with the extra point from Wes Matthews.
Hamilton fumbled the kickoff giving the Bobcats good field position and
another opportunity to score. But Hamilton stopped the Bobcats, and Matthews
missed a field goal, which kept the score even. The second quarter saw Hamilton
score again to take a 14-7 halftime lead.
Hamilton came out running in the second half, scoring on just their second
play from scrimmage on a 56-yard run from Scott Milleisen, his third touchdown
of the day. Bates scored again on a 33-yard pass from junior wide receiver
Wyatt Crosswhite to Joe Cugini to cut the Hamilton lead to a touchdown.
But the fourth quarter saw Hamilton pull away, scoring two touchdowns and
sealing the victory.
For the Bobcats, P.J. McGrail rushed for over 100 yards for the second consecutive
week, tallying up 144 yards on 27 carries. First-year Shawn Nee also had
a 100 yard performance, with 109 yards on 17 carries. Junior wide receiver
Tom Spiro caught 5 passes for 88 yards.
Bates finishes their season at 1-7, and earns a spilt of the CBB crown with
Colby and Bowdoin with their streak-ending victory over Bowdoin.
Cross Country Teams Compete in NCAA New England Qualifiers
The Bates College cross country teams competed in the NCAA New England Qualifying
Meet, with the women finishing third and the men finishing ninth overall.
The women's third place finish qualified them for the NCAA Championships.
First-year student Adelia Myrick was the top finisher for the Bobcats, running
a time of 18:49, and finishing 10th. Bates also took the 21st and 22nd spots
as well, with Abigail Phelps and Melissa Leier finishing respectively. For
the men, Justin Freeman qualified for nationals individually with a 10th
place finish out of 195 runners. The runners will travel to Wisconsin to
compete at the national level.

Volleyball Loses in the First Round of the ECAC
Tournament
The Bates College Volleyball team was knocked out in the first found of
the ECAC Tournament, losing to Tufts, 13-15 in the fifth and deciding game
of the match. The Bobcats finished the season with a record of 24-19.
Bates Begins Winter Athletics
The winter athletic season is getting underway this weekend, with almost
all of the teams in competition. The men's basketball team is at the Plattsburgh
St. Tournament in Plattsburgh, New York on the 17th and 18th of November.
The women's basketball team is at the University of Maine at Farmington
for a tournament on the 17th and 18th as well. The swim team will host Clark
University on the 19th. The men's squash team will compete at the Williams
Invitational the 16th through the 18th. The women's squash team will host
Middlebury on the 19th.
