The Week That Was in Bates Sports
October 22-28, 1995
Thanks to some sloppy conditions, the Bates football team lost 26-6 to Colby. Playing in the wind and driving rain, both teams had a hard time handling the ball, committing a total of 10 turnovers.
Colby scored early in the first quarter on a 27-yard run by Lawaun Curry (14 carries, 85 yards, 3 touchdowns). Colby scored again late in the second quarter on Curry's second touchdown, a 5-yard run. After a failed extra point, the Bobcats marched down
the field, but junior quarterback Dan Hooley's Hail Mary pass was intercepted as time expired. Colby took a 13-0 lead into the locker room.
The beginning of the third quarter saw Colby score again, this time on a 1-yard run by Brad Smith. The Mules had one more score in the third on a 52-yard pass to Curry . That brought the score to 26-0. The Bobcats averted the shutout in the fourth quart
er on a 3 yard score by first-year tailback Shawn Nee. The extra point was blocked, accounting for the final score.
Both Bobcat quarterbacks saw action in Waterville. Sophomore Chris Snow going 6 for 10 for 36 yards and 1 interception, while Hooley was 10 for 21, for 121 yards and 4 interceptions. Junior wide receiver Wyatt Crosswhite caught 4 passes for 57 yards and a
lso threw a 25-yard pass completion on a reverse. Sophomore tailback P.J. McGrail ran the ball 16 times for 30 yards. The Bobcats play the only other winless team in NESCAC on Saturday as they host the Bowdoin Polar Bears.

The Bates women's cross country team finished an impressive fourth in the New England Small College Athletic Conference women's cross country championships. The Bobcats had two runners earn All-NESCAC honors. Adelia Myrick finished sixth with a time of
20:23, while Melissa Leier finished seventh with a time of 20:27. The team finished ahead of seven other teams in the competition.

The Bates volleyball team placed second in the St. Anselm Tournament, with a record of 3-1. They defeated Division II colleges Keene St. (15-10, 15-17, 15-11, 15-6), St. Anselm (15-10, 15-10, 15-3), and St. Michael's (15-6, 15-7, 15-5). The Bobcats had
two players named to the all-tournament team, juniors Sundra Durkis and Tasha Hawthorne. Their record is now 21-15.

11/3-4 NESCAC Tournament @ Connecticut College
The Bates field hockey team defeated the University of Southern Maine, 2-1, but lost to Colby, 2-0. In the game against USM, the Bobcats scored early in the first half on an unassisted goal by Jesse Klein. They struck again midway through the first half
on another unassisted goal by Rosie Lenehan. That goal proved to be the winning one, as USM scored once in the second half, but couldn't put it past 'Cil Bloomfield again. Bloomfield had 4 saves for the Bobcats in goal.
Against Colby, the Bobcats didn't fair quite so well, being shut out by the Mules. The teams were scoreless through the first half, playing in rainy conditions. But Colby scored twice in the last three minutes to take the victory. The Bobcats ended t
heir season with a record of 8-6.
The Bates men's soccer team defeated the University of New England, 3-0, and lost to Colby, 4-2. Against UNE, Peter Rossi had a goal and an assist. Eric Trickett and Chad LaFauci each had goals for the Bobcats. Brian Anton played goal for the Bobcats,
only making one save to earn his first career shutout.
Against Colby, the first half was full of scoring action. Colby scored first two minutes into the game. Bates answered with a goal from Dan McGee two minutes later. Colby went on to score three more goals in the first half. Bates notched the only goal
of the second half on a goal by Tom Murray. Brian Anton had 3 saves and Mike Marsh had 2 saves for the Bobcats. They finished the season at 5-7-2.
The Bates women's soccer team went 0-1-1 on the week, losing to Bowdoin 6-0, and tying Colby 1-1. The Bobcats had a rough game against Bowdoin, allowing six goals. Bowdoin scored 4 goals in the first half and two in the second half . Bates had only 9
shots on goal, while Bowdoin had 23. Bobcats goalie Shannon Walker made 11 saves.
Against Colby, Colleen McCrave scored near the end of the first half to give Bates the lead. But Colby scored with just nine minutes left in the game to tie it up. Neither team scored in overtime. Bobcat goalie Suzie Arnold stopped 11 shots. The wome
n's soccer team finishes their season 6-7-1.
The Bates golf team finished 36th overall and 12th among Division III teams in the New England Intercollegiate Golf Championship. Seniors Jim Montgomery and Mike Talmanson each shot 171 to lead the team.
