SOFTBALL BREAKS INTO WIN COLUMN, 6-2, OVER UNE

LEWISTON, Maine — The Bates College softball team (1-8) picked up its first victory of the season in its first contest in Maine today as the Bobcats dropped the host University of New England Nor'Easters (0-6) by a 6-2 score.

The Bobcats got on the board in the top of the first as junior P Krissie Whiting (Contoocook, N.H.) stole home as part of a successful double steal with sophomore CF Kelley Kugel (Concord, N.H.). UNE responded with two in the bottom of the inning on two hits, an RBI ground out and a Bates error. Whiting, making her first start of the season, only allowed four hits in the final six innings after that.

Bates scored twice in the fifth and sixth innings and once in the seventh to secure the win. Three UNE errors and an RBI single by senior 2B Sarah Huffman (Ipswich, Mass.) led the scoring in the fifth, while a two-run single by sophomore RF Sarah Levine (Leeds, Mass.) brought in the runs in the sixth. The Bobcats added a run in the seventh without a hit, on an RBI grounder by rookie LF Emily Parr (Westborough, Mass.).
