BOBCATS DROP SEASON FINALE DH AT ST. JOE'S

STANDISH, Maine — The Bates College softball team's 2002 season came to a disappointing close today as the Bobcats dropped both ends of a doubleheader at St. Joseph's College, 6-5 in the opener and 8-0 in the nightcap.

Bates (6-27) looked to be in control in the first game after five innings. Rookie hurler Sarah Klenakis (Springfield, Mass.) did not allow a hit through the first five frames, allowing just one baserunner one a first-inning walk. Meanwhile the Bates bats produced a single run in each inning. Rookie 2B Erin Foye (New London, Conn.) produced a sacrifice fly in the first; sophomore RF Sarah Levine (Leeds, Mass.) stole home in the second; junior 1B Carla Flaherty (Gorham, Maine) had an RBI double in the third; sophomore SS Amanda Beck (Pleasantville, N.Y.) drove in a run in the fourth and junior CF Krissie Whiting (COntoocook, N.H.) tripled and scored on a passed ball in the fifth. Unfortunately, St. Joseph's got their first hit off Klenakis in the bottom of the sixth and followed it up with three more hits, a walk and two errors. The Monks scored six runs in the frame and kept the Bobcats off the board in the seventh to escape with the win.

Another big inning in the second game propelled SJC (23-16) to victory. The Monks sent 12 batters to the plate in the second, scoring seven runs. Rookie hurler Anna Sleeper (Bangor, Maine) in relief of junior Ginger Walsh (Hopkinton, N.H.) in the second and shut the Monks down until the seventh, when they scored an eighth run to end the game early. Bates managed just three hits in the second game.
