BATES WOMEN SPLIT WITH MIDDLEBURY AFTER 13 INNING LOSS

LEWISTON, Maine — The Bates College softball team played one of its longest games in school history in the first game of a doubleheader against Middlebury, dropping a 7-6 decision in 13 innings. The Bobcats rebounded to take the nightcap, 10-6.

In game one, Bates junior P Krissie Whiting (Contoocook, N.H.) took control of the game. She struck out the side in the top of the first, then led off the bottom of the frame with her first home run of the season. Whiting kept the Panthers in check until the sixth inning, when they tied the game, 1-1. Middlebury then went ahead in seventh on a Bates error. The Bobcats forced extra innings in the bottom of the seventh on a passed ball. Both teams scored one run in eight and two in ninth, and the game stayed deadlocked for three innings despite numerous chances for both teams. Middlebury senior 1B Amanda Bohnsack broke the deadlock with an RBI double to give Panthers a 6-5 lead in the 13th and she scored an insurance run on a fielder's choice three batters later that the Panthers would need. Bates scored one in bottom of 13th, but could not sustain the rally.

In game two, Bohnsack continued her hot hitting with a two-run HR in the top of the first to give the Panthers a lead, but the Bobcats scored five runs on two hits and four Middlebury errors in bottom of third. Bohnsack's second HR anda two-run single by sophomore P Lauren Bowe tied game at five in fourth. A two-run double by rookie DH Dayna Krakower (Derwood, Md.) in fifth provided winning margin at 7-5. Bates tacked on a couple of insurance runs in the fifth and one more in the sixth..
