BATES SOFTBALL SPLITS WITH BABSON

LEWISTON, Maine — The Bates College softball team split its first doubleheader since the end of finals, dropping Babson College 3-2 in the opener before falling 5-4 in the nightcap.

In game one, Bates junior P Krissie Whiting (Contoocook, N.H.) pitched a complete game four-hitter. She did not allow and earned run in picking up her third win of the season. Bobcat sophomore C Cami Dyson (Arvada, Colo.) went 2-3 with two RBI. In the first, she singled home junior 1B Carla Flaherty (Gorham, Maine), who had doubled. Dyson then drove home the game-winning RBI in the fifth inning, plating Whiting, who had reached on an error. Babson senior CF Michelle Malone (Trumbull, Conn.) led the Beavers with three of her team's four hits and a run scored.

In the second game, Dyson went 2-4 with another RBI single, driving Whiting home in the first. Dyson also scored on an error in the Bobcats' three-run fifth inning. Babson came from behind to win, though, batting around in the sixth inning. Malone's bases-loaded double cleared the bases, driving in three runs. Babson rookie pitcher Georgia Howe (Hallowell, Maine) retired the last nine batters of the game for her 10th win of the season.
