BATES SPLITS NESCAC FINALE WITH TRINITY

LEWISTON, Maine — The Bates College softball team matched its school record for wins in a season today as the Bobcats earned a doubleheader split with NESCAC rival Trinity College. The Bantams took game one, 4-0, while Bates rallied to take the nightcap, 4-3.

Bates (14-13, 3-5 NESCAC East) jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the second game. The Bobcats scored one run in the second inning when rookie Amanda Beck (Pleasantville, N.Y.) rapped a single to right field that went through the legs of Trinity's rightfielder, allowing Beck to circle the bases. The Bobcats tacked on three more runs in the third when sophomore pitcher Krissie Whiting (Contoocook, N.H.) singled, stole second and scored on successive passed balls. After the Bantams got two outs, three straight Bates batters reached, capped by a two-run double from first-year DP Sarah Levine (Leeds, Mass.). Trinity scored two unearned runs in the fourth inning and another in the fifth to cut the lead to 4-3, but could not bring home the equalizer.

Trinity (7-22, 1-7 NESCAC) rode the strong pitching of sophomore hurler Kristi McDermott (Barrington, R.I.) to a 4-0 victory game one. McDermott allowed just four hits and struck out four batters in going the distance. Only one Bates runner got as far as third base, in the third inning, when McDermott worked out of a bases-loaded jam. The Bantams took advantage of two Bates errors in the fourth inning to score the game's runs. Leadoff hitter Liz Bontempo (Granby, Mass.) reached on an error and moved to third when Susan Kelley (Millford, Mass.) Reached safely on a one-out bunt attempt. Senior SS Tricia Mase (Northford, Conn.) drove in Bontempo just before sophomore OF Laura Heath (Windsor, Conn.) cleared the bases with a three-run home run.
