BATES SOFTBALL SWEEPS ST. JOE'S, SETS SINGLE SEASON VICTORY RECORD

LEWISTON, Maine — The Bates College softball team swept a pair of games from the visiting St. Joseph's College Monks today, 6-5 in nine innings in the first game and 2-1 in the nightcap. With the two wins, the Bobcats improve to 16-13 on the season, surpassing 2000's 14-10 team for the most wins in a single season.

Bates took a 5-1 lead on the strength of four unearned runs in the third inning in which sophomore Krissie Whiting (Contoocook, N.H.) had the Bobcats' lone RBI. They added one more in the fourth on an RBI single by senior Laura Lent (Clinton, Mass.). St. Joseph's (20-12) climbed back in the game on a pinch RBI double by Kristen Gaudette (Mexico, Maine) in the fifth and a solo home run by junior RF Kelly Premo (Brunswick, Maine) in the sixth. The Monks tied the game with two out in the top of the seventh, taking advantage of a Bates error and a two-out single by sophomore LF Kim Little (Lewiston, Maine) before sophomore SS Cortney Sirois (Oxford, Maine) smacked a two-run double. Bates hurler Ginger Walsh (Hopkinton, N.H.) struck out Primo to end the inning. After both teams squandered chances in the eighth frame, Bates scored in the ninth as sophomore C Brooke Tardiff (Wells, Maine) hit an infield grounder to deep short that scored runner Amanda Beck (Pleasantville, N.Y.) Sirois finished up 3-4 with two doubles and a triple, a run scored and two RBI for SJC, as six of the Monks' seven hits went for extra bases. Walsh improved to 6-8 with the win. while St. Joe's starter Deirdre Regan (Portland, Maine) fell to 1-2.

Game two was a 2-1 pitcher's duel between Whiting and St. Joe's junior Sarah Webster (Stockton Springs, Maine). The Monks took the lead on Primo's second home run of the day and fourth of the season to lead off the second, but Whiting would not allow another St. Joe's hit until the sixth inning. Four of Bates' six hits came in the decisive fourth inning, as an RBI single by rookie C Cami Dyson (Arvada, Colo.) tied the game with one out and senior CF Anna Wulffleff (Wilton, Conn.) smacked a run-scoring double for the game winner. Whiting did not allow a base runner past first base after the third inning as the Bobcats improved to 7-2 in one-run games.
