BATES SOFTBALL TOPS .500 WITH SWEEP OF COLBY

LEWISTON, Maine — The Bates College softball team went over the .500 plateau for the first time all season as the Bobcats swept in-state rivals Colby College for their fifth and sixth straight wins, 3-2 in the opener and 5-3 in the nightcap.

Bates (13-12, 2-4 NESCAC East) had their second come-from-behind win in as many days in the opener. Colby (6-13, 2-6 NESCAC East) scored a pair of two-out runs in the top of the fourth inning on an RBI single by sophomore RF Kelly Martin (Portland, Maine) and a Bobcat error. Bates tied the contest in the bottom of the fifth on senior SS Laura Lent's (Clinton, Mass.) two-out two-run double. Rookie DH Cami Dyson (Arvada, Colo.) brought home Lent two pitches later for the game-winner. Bates sophomore hurler Ginger Walsh (Hopkinton, N.H.) improved to 5-7 with her complete-game five-hit performance in which she allowed just one earned run. Sophomore Stacy Thurston (Post Mills, Vt.) took the loss despite allowing just four hits to fall to 1-1.

In game two, sophomore pitcher Krissie Whiting (Contoocook, N.H.) got Bates on the board in the first inning when she reached on an error, moved to second on a walk and scored two batters later on Dyson's sacrifice fly. Colby grabbed the lead with three runs in the third on RBI singles by rookie DH Amy Lisavich (Chelmsford, Mass.) and sophomore SS Caroline Koskinas (Rochester, N.Y.) and a Bates error. The Bobcats reclaimed the lead again in the fifth inning when they loaded the bases on an error and two walks by Colby starter Kate Trasher (Danvers, Mass.). Relief pitcher Steph Greenleaf (Gardiner, Maine) gave up a sacrifice fly by Lent and then uncorked two passed balls that allowed the tying and go-ahead runs to score. Bates tacked on an insurance run in the sixth on a triple by rookie 1B Amanda Beck (Pleasantville, N.Y.) and a sac fly by sophomore 3B Brooke Tardiff (Wells, Maine). Whiting improved to 7-4 on the season, while Greenleaf fell to 3-5 with the loss.
