BATES, UMF GAIN DOUBLEHEADER SPLIT

LEWISTON, Maine -- The Bates College softball team (11-6) split their second straight doubleheader today, shutting out the University of Maine-Farmington (13-10) in the opener, 7-0, before falling, 13-4, in the nightcap.

The Bobcats got a strong pitching performance from rookie Ginger Walsh (Contoocook, N.H.) in the opener. Walsh went six innings, scattering six hits while walking two and striking out two before being relieved by classmate Jen Tjepkema (Virginia Beach, Va.) in the seventh inning. Walsh evened her record at 4-4 with the win. Offensively, Bates' runs were scored by seven different players, while six players had one RBI each. Senior co-captains Shannon Browher (Laconia, N.H.) and Katy Marshall (Contoocook, N.H.) each had perfect days at the plate. Browher, the second leading hitter in the NESCAC, went 4-4 with a stolen base, while Marshall was 3-3 with an RBI.

UMF got its revenge in Game Two, scoring 13 runs before Bates tacked on four runs in the bottom of the fifth. Rookie and Lewiston native Richelle Dube led the Beavers with a 3-3 game at the plate while scoring three runs and driving in one. Junior 3B Becky Roak (Portland, Maine) was 2-4 with three RBI. Bates sophomore Teresa Janisch (Marina, Calif.) drove in three runs in the fifth inning. Junior Jen Crawford (Southboro, Mass.) suffered the loss, her first of the season.
