BATES CLOBBERS JOHNSON AND WALES IN HOME FINALE

LEWISTON, Maine -- The Bates College softball team ended their 2000 home season today with a pair of decisive victories over the visiting Johnson and Wales University Wildcats, 18-8 and 12-4.

The Bobcats (14-8) saw every position in the batting order but the ninth position score at least two runs in the opener. Rookie pitcher Krissie Whiting (Contoocook, N.H.) led the way, going 3-3 with a double, three runs scored and three RBI. On the mound, she allowed just three runs (one earned) in 4.1 innings of work, re-entering the game in the third inning. Junior catcher Peg Ficks (Washington, Conn.), seeing her first action behind the plate after spending much of the season at DP, responded by going 3-4 with two runs scored and an RBI. Whiting improved to 5-1 with the win. Johnson and Wales (5-27) hurler Laura Hutchinson (Jamestown, Pa.) also had a big day at the plate, going 2-3 with a double, a home run and four RBI.

Bates jumped out to a quick lead in game two, sending 10 batters to the plate in the bottom of the first inning and scoring six runs. The big blow was Whiting's first career home run, a three-run shot that caught a robust wind and carried over the left field fence. Bates took an 11-0 lead into the fourth inning, but Johnson and Wales used some big hits, including a home run by rookie pitcher Cynthia Halloran (Smithtown, N.Y.) to bring the lead below the eight-run rule. Sophomore SS Whitney Hamill (Watertown, Conn.) ended the contest with a bases loaded single to shortstop, wrapping up a game in which she went 4-4 with 3 RBI and a stolen base. Bates senior Shannon Browher (Laconia, N.H.) went 2-4 with three runs and three stolen bases in the second game. Her three singles on the day give her 28 for the season, establishing a new single-season Bates record. Browher surpassed fellow senior co-captain Katy Marshall (Contoocook, N.H.), who had 27 singles as a sophomore.
