BATES DROPS A PAIR AT BOWDOIN

(Taken from a Bowdoin College press release)

BRUNSWICK, Maine -- Bowdoin College sophomore Katie Sheridan (Marblehead, Mass.) delivered a two-run double in the 10th inning of Game 1 to give the Polar Bears a dramatic, 6-5, victory over Bates while classmate Kristie Miller (North Canaan, Conn.) knocked in six runs in the nightcap as Bowdoin (6-7) completed the sweep, 8-5. The victories give the Polar Bears sixth straight over Bates (0-2) and improves Bowdoin's record to 20-16 in the all-time series.

The Bobcats used an errant throw to take a 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning, but Bowdoin responded in the bottom of the inning when Erin McDonough (Portland, Maine) stroked a two-out, two-run double to center. Gina Laugelli (Long Branch, N.J.) cruised on the mound for the Polar Bears, allowing just the one unearned run in the first six innings, but the Bobcats managed to send the game into extra innings. Anna Wulfleff (Wilton, Conn.) led off the inning with a single and advanced to third on a pair of infield outs. Carla Flaherty (Gorham, Maine) sent the game into extra innings with a single up the middle to tie the game.

After a scoreless eighth and ninth, Bates appeared to wrap up the game with three runs in the top of the 10th. RBI singles by Teresa Janisch (Marina, Calif.) and Laura Lent (Clinton, Mass.) combined with an error plated three runs for a 5-2 lead. The Polar Bears rallied in the bottom of the inning as singles by Laugelli and McDonough cut the lead to one at 5-4 before Sheridan stepped up and belted her double to left for the sudden-death victory. Laugelli (4-0) picked up the victory for Bowdoin while Ginger Walsh (Hopkinton, N.H.) took the loss (0-1).

In the second game, Miller belted a grand slam in the five run first inning and then pounded a two-RBI single in the second as the Polar Bears raced out to an 8-1 lead after two frames. Jessie Poulin (Hamden, Maine) scattered five runs and 10 hits over her seven inning stint to pick up her first victory (1-3). Janisch led the Bates attack with three hits and two RBI while Krissie Whiting (Contoocook, N.H.) went the distance (0-1) in the losing effort.
