BATES SKIING TAKES SIXTH AT SEASON OPENER

LAKE PLACID, N.Y. — Senior alpine skier Kyle Hildebrand (Waitsfield, Vt.) and sophomore Nordic performer Haley Johnson (Lake Placid, N.Y.) each had outstanding performances in their season debuts as the Bates College skiing team placed sixth in their opening competition of the season, the St. Lawrence University Carnival.

Hildebrand, a three-time All-American, won a race for the second time in his career, taking the men's slalom with a combined time 1:31.65. His previous career win came in 2000, when he won the slalom at the University of New Hampshire Carnival. Hildebrand also took third in the giant slalom with a time of 2:10.32. Junior Kim Rogers (Charlestown, Mass.) had the women's top alpine performance, taking 13th in the slalom with a time of 1:44.09.

Johnson, competing in her first season for the Bates Nordic team, placed fourth in the 15-kilometer classic race with time of 1:05.02. Johnson finished only behind three women from Dartmouth, who won the carnival. Johnson and junior Janie Marshall (Boise, Idaho) finished sixth in the women's 2x3 sprint relay event. Junior Justin Easter (Jay, Maine) took seventh in the men's 20K classic event with a time of 11:31.4, less than two seconds out of the top five. He and classmate Nate Rogers (St. Anselmo, Cal.) took seventh in the men's 2x3 relay.
