BATES MEN'S TRACK AND FIELD CAPTURES NESCAC CROWN; DANAHY, ZWICK NAMED MOST OUTSTANDING PERFORMERS
Bates Women Finish Ninth; Anthony Qualifies For NCAA Championship

MEDFORD, Mass. -- The Bates College men's outdoor track and field team won their first-ever New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) championship by a convincing 38.5 points over second place Williams College, 169.5 to 131, on the campus of Tufts University today.

Leading the way for the Bobcats were senior Mike Danahy (So. Windsor, Conn.) and junior Erik Zwick (Virginia Beach, Va.), who shared the Frank Sabasteanski Memorial Award as the most outstanding male performers at the meet.

Zwick was one of two athletes at the meet to win multiple NESCAC Championships, capturing the 100-meter dash with a time of 11.02 seconds and the 200-meters in 22.24. Zwick's 10.98 seconds in the prelims of the 100 marked the first time he has run under 11 seconds. He also anchored the Bobcats' second-place 4-by-400 relay team and fourth-place 4-by-100 team.

Danahy, a three-time All-American, won his first-ever NESCAC title in the 10,000-meter run on Saturday with a time of 30:46.19, qualifying him automatically for the NCAA Championships. He also placed second in the 5,000-meters, an event he had reached the NCAAs in on Thursday at the Penn Relays in Philadelphia.

The Bates men had three other individual champions. First-year runner Justin Easter (Jay, Maine) captured the 3,000-meter steeplechase in 9:14.95, 35 seconds better than his previous personal best and provisionally qualifying him for the NCAAs. Senior Lucas Adams (Nottingham, N.H.) won the hammer throw with a heave of 176-0 for his first-ever NESCAC title in the event. Bates also won the distance medley relay with a school- and NESCAC-record time of 10:06.69

While the Bates women did not have any individual champions, first-year runner Abby Anthony (Jamestown, R.I.) placed second in the 10,000 meters with a time of 37:26.75, qualifying her for her first NCAA Championships and setting a school record by nine seconds. Senior Erika Bristol (Pittsfield, Mass.) took third in the hammer throw with a personal best of 143-06.
