Danahy, Twiest Named All-American

LEWISTON, Maine - Bates College seniors Mike Danahy of So. Windsor, Conn., and Matt Twiest of Albuquerque, N.M., capped their stellar cross country careers by leading the Bobcats to a 10th-place finish at the NCAA Division III Cross Country Championships at the University of Wisconsin-Osh Kosh.

Danahy earned his first cross-country All-America honor by placing ninth with a career-best time of 24:02 for the eight-kilometer course. The ninth-place finish ties the second best in school history, matching Twiest's placement from 1997. Danahy, who was named New England Runner of the Year yesterday, earns his third All-America bid in the past calendar year, having placed at the 1999 NCAA indoor and outdoor track and field championships. Twiest placed 17th overall with a time of 24:21, earning All-America recognition for the third time, joining Mark Hatch '86 as the Bobcats' only three-time cross country All-American.

Bates' 10th place finish as a team was their second-best performance in school history, eclipsed only by a sixth-place finish in 1977. The Bobcats entered the race ranked 19th in the nation. Bates improved to third among regional teams, scoring 281 points, just behind Tufts University (276) and just ahead of Williams College (284).

North Central College won the team championship for the 16th time, while senior Dave Davis of the University of Puget Sound (Wash.) won the individual title.
