MIKE HOLLAND, KIM WALKER NAMED 1998 BATES COLLEGE LINDHOLM SCHOLAR-ATHLETES

LEWISTON, Maine -- Mike Holland of Hingham, Mass., and Kim Walker of Hampton, N.H., have been named winners of the annual Milton L. Lindholm Scholar-Athlete Award at Bates College.

The award, named for the college's long-time dean of admissions, is presented every year to the Bates senior man and woman who best combine athletic and academic skill. The honored students are those with at least two varsity letters who have compiled the highest grade-point average.

Holland, a 1994 graduate of Boston College High School, is a five-time dean's list student and an economics major. A three-time letter winner as a defensive midfielder for the men's lacrosse team, Holland scored his first career goal April 29 against Plymouth State College. Upon graduation, Holland will begin work with an economic consultant firm in Cambridge, Mass.

"Mike plays a role that coaches and teammates really appreciate as a defensive midfielder," said head lacrosse coach Al Brown. "His leadership has been instrumental. Mike takes his role seriously, but gets the job done with a smile."

Walker, a 1994 graduate of Winnacunnet High School is a six-time dean's list student and an English and women's studies double major. Walker has earned letters in three different sports. She was a member of the women's soccer team in 1994 and 1995. As a member of the outdoor women's track team in 1994-95, Walker earned All-New England and All-ECAC honors in the 3,000-meter run.

During the 1997 cross country season, Walker earned All-New England honors when she finished 16th at the New England regional championships and helped the team to a best-ever 15th place finish at the NCAA Division III national championships. Walker was a junior adviser in 1996-97 and participated in a Ladd internship with the American Red Cross in Brunswick, Maine, in 1997. She will teach this summer at St. Pauls School in Concord, N.H.

"Kim has always been a great mediator and leader among her fellow students," said Timothy Chin, assistant professor of English, Walker's faculty adviser. "She is the kind of person that every teacher and coach wants to work with, especially when she excels in both areas."

First presented in 1976 and considered one of Bates' most prestigious student honors, the Lindholm Award is sponsored by the Bates College Key, a service organization of Bates alumni. It is named for Bates' dean emeritus of admissions, who was a football captain and student council president at the college.
