CALNER, HUBBARD NAMED TO GTE/CoSIDA ACADEMIC ALL-DISTRICT TEAM

LEWISTON, Maine -- Bates College junior defensive back Paul Calner of Narragansett, R.I., and junior linebacker Frost Hubbard of East Walpole, Mass., have been named to the GTE/CoSIDA District I Academic All-District team.

Calner, a biology major, started all eight games for the Bobcats and was sixth on the team with 41 tackles and tied for fourth with 30 solo tackles. Calner tied for the team lead with five tackles for a loss and was second with four and a half sacks. In 1997, Calner was second on the team with 92 tackles. A two-time dean's list student, Calner is also an accomplished pianist who has composed and performed his own work at College functions.

Hubbard, a psycholgy major, led the team with 92 tackles and 59 unassisted tackles. He tied with Calner with five tackles for a loss, while leading the team with six passes broken up. He had one interception, returned for 17 yards. Named to the ECAC Honor Roll for his 20-tackle performance against Williams College on Oct. 10, Hubbard has started all 24 games in his collegiate career, recording 10 or more tackles 19 times. He led the team in tackles in 1997 and was second in 1996, when he was named New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) Defensive Rookie of the Year. A catcher on the Bobcat baseball team, Hubbard is a four-time dean's list student.

To be eligible for the GTE/CoSIDA Academic All-District team, a player must be a starter or significant contributor to his team and must carry a grade-point average higher than 3.2. First-year players are ineligible. District I includes colleges and universities in NCAA Divisions II and III located in New England and New York. Calner and Hubbard will now be placed on the national ballot to select the Academic All-America team that will be announced Dec. 8.

Calner is a 1996 graduate of Bishop Hendricken High School. He is the son of Paul and Mary Calner of Narragansett.

Hubbard is a 1996 graduate of Walpole High School. He is the son of Frost and Melissa Hubbard of East Walpole.
