FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE BATES MEN'S LAX AND GOLF COACH AL BROWN RESIGNS LEWISTON, Maine - Bates College head men's lacrosse and golf coach Al Brown has resigned to take a position as director of athletics and boy's lacrosse coach at Portsmouth Abbey School in Portsmouth, R.I., announced Suzanne Coffey, Bates director of athletics. In five years at Bates, Brown has led the Bobcats to four winning seasons while compiling a 42-34 record. In 2000, Bates posted a 9-7 record, returning to the postseason for the first time since 1987 with a berth in the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Division III New England championship tournament. Brown also served as head golf coach in 1999, directing the Bobcats to their first Colby-Bates-Bowdoin (CBB) conference title since 1996. Prior to coming to Bates, Brown spent eight years coaching at Alfred University, where he compiled an 85-25 record. "Al Brown will certainly be missed at Bates," Coffey said. "during ihs tenure, he garnered both respect and admiration. Al was a first-rate rcruiter and a fine teacher and coach."
