McCRAVE, JARVIS NAMED BATES ATHLETES OF THE WEEK
LEWISTON, Maine -- Senior women's soccer player Colleen McCrave of Walpole, Mass., and junior football player Ryan Jarvis of Dove Canyon, Calif., formerly of West Boxford, Mass., have been named Bates Athletes of the Week for the week ending Oct. 4.
McCrave, who was also named New England Small College Athletic Conference co-player of the week, is a senior forward on the women's soccer team. She helped the Bobcats to a 2-1 record last week with three goals and two assists for eight points. McCrave scored two goals and an assist in the Bobcats' 4-3 win over Simmons College Sept. 30. Her assist on Bates' second goal, which came in the 29th minute, was the 21st of her career, making her the Bobcats' all-time leader. McCrave also scored her first two goals of the season in the second half. The Bobcats lost, 3-0, to Tufts on Oct. 3, but came back the next day to defeat Babson College, 3-2, in overtime, when McCrave scored the winning goal on a rebound. The victory was Bates' first this season over a ranked team in the National College Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) New England poll.
Jarvis, a running back, inherited the starting role when junior Paul Erickson was injured on the Bobcats' first offensive play of the season the week before. In his second career start, a 28-6 Bates loss at Tufts University on Oct. 3, Jarvis carried the ball a school-record 40 times for 138 yards. Though he did not see much playing time last year behind the NESCAC's leading rusher P.J. McGrail (Class of 1998), Jarvis rushed for more than 100 yards in his only other start, gaining 108 yards against Hamilton College, on Nov. 11, 1996, subbing for the injured McGrail.
McCrave is a 1995 graduate of Walpole High School. She is the daughter of William and Annmarie McCrave, 6 Eagle Drive, Walpole.
Jarvis is a 1996 graduate of The Brooks School. He is the son of Edward and Nancy Jarvis, Dove Canyon, Calif.
