AUGUSTA, Maine - The Bates College men's cross country team helped the Bobcats secure a sweep of the Maine-Preqsue Isle Invitational, defeating the hosts by 44 points. The Bobcats were running without any of the top scorers from last year's team, but saw first-year runners take all the scoring positions.

Leading the way for the Bobcats was first-year runner Justin Easter (Jay, Maine), who won his first intercollegiate race. Justin had the advantage of having run the course at the Augusta in the Maine State Class C championships last fall, winning the third of his three-straight crowns. Easter was won the meet in 28:28, 14 seconds faster than the second place finisher from Babson. The Bobcats first-year contingent took the next two spots, with Justin Bates (Abbott, Maine) and Jesse Tisch (Bedford, N.Y.) running 29:03 and 29:09, respectively. Malcolm Gray (Bronxville, N.Y.) took seventh overall in 29:35 and Eric Knackmuhs (Wyckoff, N.J.) rounded out the scoring, taking 14th place, just ahead of senior Matt Payson, who was returning from a two-year absence from the team.

The Bobcats, ranked 23rd in the nation in the most recent College Cross Country Coaches Association poll, take on two of the teams ranked ahead of them in MIT and Tufts, next week at Springbrook.
