CLINTON, N.Y. -- Bates College senior Mike Danahy (So. Windsor, Conn.) became the second Bobcat in four years to win the New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) championship, easily establishing a course record at Hamilton College today.

With a time of 25:22, Danahy won the 8K race handily, finishing 23 seconds ahead of his nearest competitor. This was Danahy's third top-10 finish at the NESCAC's. He placed seventh as a sophomore and fifth last year. Danahy has still lost only once to a Division III opponent this season. He joins Justin Freeman '97, who won the 1996 race at Bates' home course at Springbrook Golf Club as the Bobcats' last two NESCAC champions.

Earning his fourth straight All-NESCAC honor was Danahy's classmate Matt Twiest (Albuquerque, N.M.), who placed fifth with a time of 26:31. This was his fourth All-NESCAC performance and third top-five finish, to go with a third-place finish in 1996 and a fourth-place last year.

Rounding out the scoring for the Bobcats were seniors Brendan Hahesy (Melrose, Mass.), who place 20th, and John McGrath (Merrimack, N.H.), who took 27th, and first-year Malcolm Gray (Bronxville, N.Y.), who earned his first scoring performance of the season with a 32nd place finish.

As a team, the Bobcats placed third overall, the same spot they finished last season. Bates will take part in the ECAC Championship meet next weekend and attempt to qualify for the NCAA Division III championships as a team for the first time on Nov. 13.
